Good news, everybody!

It's been a strange road for Futurama, which first aired on FOX and then was resurrected recently as four direct-to-DVD movies that were then re-cut into new episodes for Comedy Central. Whether the series would continue at all after that has been murky - until now that is, as we're hearing more episodes are indeed in the pipeline.

Collider.com reports that an inside source tells them that Comedy Central has ordered 13 new episodes of the series, comprising another season. Collider notes that this is still technically a rumor, but that they have been given word that the Futurama production offices have been opened and casting has begun for upcoming episodes - Don't worry, we assume that's guest actors, not any move to replace the main cast.

Collider guesses an official announcement might be coming around Comic-Con – something I think could very well be the case too.

It's official: 'Futurama' is reborn!

Holy Bender Bending Rodríguez!Six years after getting axed by Fox, Futurama is being resurrected on Comedy Central.
A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television confirms that the cable net has ordered 26 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's late, great animated series to air beginning in 2010. The studio cites Futurama's "blockbuster" performance on DVD and in reruns on Comedy Central as the reason for its rebirth.
Hmmm... sound familiar?
"When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing -- that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived," 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden said in a joint statement. "But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell."
Adds Groening: "We’re thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000."
I have a hunch Groening isn't the only one doing a happy dance. (That's your cue to start filling up the comments section.)

Taking a page from the "Family Guy" resurrection guidebook, the long-canceled Fox animated comedy is returning with an order from Comedy Central for 26 episodes to run over two seasons.

"Futurama" creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen already are working on stories for the new batch of episodes of the sci-fi cartoon, slated to premiere on Comedy Central in mid-2010.

As with "Family Guy," whose improbable return was triggered by big DVD sales and solid ratings for the show's reruns on Cartoon Network, the performance of "Futurama's" repeats on Comedy Central and on disc was key to its resurrection.

"When we brought back 'Family Guy' several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing -- that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived," 20th TV chairman Gary Newman said. "But 'Futurama' was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back."

The order was preceded by four feature-length original "Futurama" specials: "Bender's Big Score," "The Beast With a Billion Backs," "Bender's Game" and "Into the Wild Green Yonder," which have done well on DVD and on Comedy Central. The most recent special, "Yonder," premieres in September on the network.

Comedy Central was happy with the specials and with the 72 produced episodes of "Futurama" it acquired from 20th Century Fox TV in 2006.

"Yet there is nothing like new, self-contained episodes week to week," said David Bernath, Comedy Central's senior vp programming. "This is all about reinvigorating the franchise, giving it a new burst of energy."

"Futurama," which aired from 1999-2003 on Fox, centers on Philip Fry (voiced by Billy West), a pizza delivery boy who accidentally freezes himself on Dec. 31, 1999, and wakes up 1,000 years later with a "diverse" new group of friends including Leela (Katey Sagal), a tough but lovely one-eyed alien, and human-like robot Bender (John DiMaggio).

When the series returns with originals, it will have been seven years after the show's last original episode aired on Fox. That is a much longer hiatus than the three years "Family Guy" spent on the bench before being summoned back.

The four "Futurama" specials, produced in the past 2 1/2 years, helped bridge the gap, said Groening, who also created Fox/20th TV's "The Simpsons."

"It was a great way of keeping the show alive," he said, "and one of the great things was that everyone enjoyed doing them, so it's been relatively easy trying to get everyone who was originally on the show to come back."

Though no deals have been closed, all key voice cast members are expected to return for the new episodes, along with the series' core writing team.

As for the story lines, the new episodes will pick up where "Yonder" took off -- with the main characters fleeing death and flying into the unknown.

But after four epic feature-length films, "what we will try to do is go a little bit back to pure comedy, characters and sci-fi," Cohen said.

As with "Family Guy," 20th TV has the right to shop the new "Futurama" episodes to a broadcast network, with Comedy Central getting a second window for a reduced license fee. Fox is the prime target, and the studio had had a preliminary conversation but no serious talks are expected in the near future.

If Comedy Central remains the only outlet, Newman admits that "the economics will become more challenging," but the studio bets on more strong DVD sales. And with the new 26-episode order, "Futurama" will have 98 standalone episodes (plus another 16 from the DVD specials), allowing the show to be taken out for a broadcast syndication sale.

Who cares where?

Μερικά νέα για το cast στα νέα επεισόδια:

Futurama Cast Replaced?

Futurama being recast? Several outlets, including EW.com, are reporting that apparently 20th Century Fox, who produce the series, are currently auditioning actors to take over all of the major roles on the series, replacing Billy West ("Fry", "Hubert J. Farnsworth", "Zoidberg"), Katey Sagal ("Leela"), John DiMaggio ("Bender"), Maurice LaMarche ("Kif Kroker"), and Tress MacNeille ("Mom").

IGN TV contacted 20th Century Fox and were told, "We love the Futurama voice performers and absolutely wanted to use them, but unfortunately, we could not meet their salary demands. While replacing these talented actors will be difficult, the show must go on. We are confident that we will find terrific new performers to give voice to Matt [Groening] and David [X. Cohen]'s brilliantly subversive characters."

With the show being brought back, certainly it wouldn't be surprising if the voice actors asked for raises – and considering Futurama is now being produced for Comedy Central, not FOX, it's also possible those salary requests were too high for 20th Century Fox and Comedy Central to justify, since cable series typically operate at lower budgets than network series.

However, there are some interesting things to consider here. Several weeks ago, the details of the Futurama panel at Comic-Con were revealed, and they read:

"Futurama: Life or Death?! BE A PART OF SCI-FI HISTORY! Join Executive Producers Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, and stars Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio and Maurice LaMarche for high-stakes thrills as a top-ranking Fox executive decides live, on stage, whether Futurama will make yet another triumphant return, or whether it is gone forever! The very fate of Futurama hangs in the balance! Paramedics will be standing by in case the intense excitement causes any panelists to collapse. Raucous celebration or abject despair to follow the news."

Obviously, the whole "life or death" thing is a joke, since the show has officially been brought back. And then there's the fact that three of the cast members said to be among those being replaced are scheduled to be on the panel. Certainly, salary negotiations could have fallen apart since the panel was first set up, but it makes you wonder… One thing's for certain, it will make the Futurama Comic-Con panel even more of a big deal. If the original cast is there, and this is an elaborate hoax, then fans will no doubt be very relieved. If they're not there, and they are indeed being recast, then it's not hard to imagine plenty of not-so-happy fan questions on the subject, to say the least.

Update: Variety is now chiming in on theFuturama situation, and it looks like this is indeed the real deal, as in not any sort of hoax. Variety confirms that the show has a dramatically slashed budget, and that the salary offers made to the cast were far below what they were asking – which Variety says was likely around $75,000 an episode. The budget cuts (compared to what the show had when it originally was produced) have also led to a smaller writing staff and a shorter schedule to produce episodes.

If there's any hope for fans, it's the fact that a casting call for new voice actors doesn't necessarily mean that a deal still can't be made. In fact, Variety points out that when negotiations were going badly for new deals with The Simpsons cast several years ago, similar casting inquiries were made for new actors – and obviously, in that case, the original cast did eventually come to terms on a new deal. Let's all cross our fingers that history repeats itself here...

Futurama is saved,Network and Original castmembers Reach new agreement.

When Fox announced the return of Futurama earlier this year, fans were ecstatic. Shortly thereafter, the network let everyone down by saying they were recasting (http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b134898_this_just_in_want_know_who_mike.html) the voices due to salary issues and a decreased budget.
Thankfully, however, disaster has been averted. This very afternoon, Fox has closed new deals with the original castmembers. Says a rep for the series, "Maurice LaMarche announced that he would be returning on his Facebook page." Katey Sagal and Tress MacNeille's deals are official as well, and a Futurama rep tells us, "[We] hope to have deals with all five by end of day."
New episodes of Futurama should be ready by mid-2010.

To “Futurama” επιστρέφει!

Bender is back!
