'Bones' at Comic-Con 2012: David Boreanaz zings 'The Vampire Diaries' and more

Only the vaguest of spoilers were revealed at the "Bones" Comic-Con panel on Friday afternoon, but that's OK -- star David Boreanaz was in top form. Armed with a bunch of zingers, the actor took aim at everything from his old home on The WB, The CW's hit "The Vampire Diaries," and even co-star Emily Deschanel (in a fun way).

The panel started off with a bang -- metaphorically -- as Deschanel and Boreanaz discussed the possibility of maybe seeing Brennan and Booth between the sheets. "We may see a bit of that this season," Boreanaz teased.

"There might be some flash forwards -- there are more 'Bones' babies to be made," added Deschanel.

But then Boreanaz shared his gripe with the actual union not taking place on camera: "I wanted to just put you up on the washing machine and go at it. I had change for a dollar. The quarters were stacked so high -- 20 on the left, 24 on the right."

Later, Boreanaz turned his sights toward The WB, joking about "Angel's" former home, "I don't think you can call it a network if it was on The WB."

Current WB iteration The CW also took a hit, with Boreanaz teasingly going off on "The Vampire Diaries": "Everyone carries around a diary? I'm confused. 'Oh, I made love to a vampire last night. ... Let me say some poetry to you, you dark evil man in the tunnel.'"

In all seriousness, though, we did learn some new things about "Bones" Season 8. In non-Booth/Brennan news, Cam (Tamara Taylor) is totally getting a boyfriend. "Cam will have a new love interest this year -- somebody we know," spills executive producer Stephen Nathan. "[Someone] it will be very surprising to see her with."

Pelant (Andrew Leeds) will be an integral figure all throughout Season 8. The serial killer will be present in the first episode back, then "he'll come back in ways you don't expect," Nathan says.

The season will start off with Brennan still on the lam three months later, but she'll reunite with Booth on the sooner side of things. Booth will be understandably upset, and the season will focus on the Jeffersonian family (and the Booth-Brennan family) being torn apart and coming back together.

If you can't wait until "Bones" returns on Sept. 17, the Comic-Con panel also offered the first glimpse at the mysterious bonus episodes that FOX ordered in addition to the shortened Season 7. Nathan says they'll be peppered throughout the season, and one will be told from the point of view of a skull.

'Bones' Comic-Con panel: Booth to go ballroom dancing!

Bones may have had a small panel of only three people, but they proved quantity doesn’t equal quantity. Read a rundown of the fun that went down during the Bones panel in Ballroom 20.

The Big Revelations: Many! Here’s a rundown:

Dancing king? An undercover episode is being planned that will find Booth ballroom dancing! “Will I be wearing a tight, shiny, one-piece suit?” Boreanaz asked, mildly concerned.

Cam’s (not so new) love: Cam’s getting a boyfriend — and it’s someone we know! “ who will be very interesting to see her with,” says Nathan.
Hacker Christopher Pelant will stick around for much of the season. “Pelant will be a cloud that hangs over them,” says Nathan.

Booth’s mom Booth’s family will be explored “a little more,” says Nathan. “I think it’s time to see his mother.”

Will we ever see THAT night? It doesn’t sound like there are plans to flash back to the night Bones and Booth first slept together, but Nathan said separation might bring them close together once again. “They’ve been apart for three months, who knows?” Meanwhile, Boreanaz joked that he’s disappointed that his recommendation for the pair’s first encounter was not taken. “I wanted to put her up on the washing machine and just go at it. I had change for a dollar!” he joked.

Bones on the run: The new season will pick up three months after the season finale, but it’s likely that Booth hasn’t spent all that time twiddling his thumbs. “At this point everyone’s patience is very, very thing,” said Nathan, who wouldn’t share the details of Bones’ time on the run. All the shared? “It’s a big reveal.”

Least Incisive Audience Question: The Joss Whedon fan who “slept on the curb” to ask about getting Boreanaz to collaborate with Whedon again. “The experiences I had on the show were great….we’ll see. You guys keep pushing and maybe that’ll happen one day.”

The Winner of the Panel: David Boreanaz because he knows how to get a rise out of the crowd. Between proposing an Angel movie, to talk of washing machine sex, to bashing The Vampire Diaries. (“Everyone carries around a diary? I’m confused. ‘Oh, I made love to a vampire night last night.’)

Ausiello: The February installment unfolds as follows, per exec producer Stephen Nathan: “Brennan is working on a case that someone does not want her to solve. And in their attempt to prevent her from doing that, she gets shot and has a near-death experience where she meets her mother again.” The family “reunion” forces Brennan to take a good hard look at her belief system. “This is the further evolution of Brennan’s character,” explains Nathan. “She is somebody who has been so literal, so rational and so reasonable; she wants everything to be explained. And now she is having an experience that is inexplicable, so she has to admit that there are things that are not explainable. As much as she tries to discount it and dismiss it, it changes her and makes her a bit more open to the world.”
Question: What’s the biggest scoop on Bones (Booth and Brennan, maybe?) you have at the moment? —Elena
Ausiello: Piggybacking on the above spoiler (which was pretty big, IMHO), Nathan says Brennan’s heavenly run-in with her mom will give viewers insight into “what she was like as a kid, before she became the Brennan that we know. She picks up the relationship with her mother where it left off.”

Ausiello: David Boreanaz will be calling the shots behind-the-scenes, so rest assured major stuff will go down. “David likes to direct big episodes, and this will be big,” previews exec producer Stephen Nathan, adding that the hour will “feature a bit of action” and, quite possibly, a casualty or two. “We’re not going to be altogether sure how everybody is at the end of the season finale,” he teases, cryptically. “Lives will hang in the balance.”

Question: Be your awesome self and please help sort out some Bones fandom confusion: What ep does Booth’s mom appear in and will she be in more than one episode this season and/or next? —Denise
Ausiello: First off, Joanna Cassidy turns up in the April 15 episode and not the April 29 season finale, as was reported. Secondly, although she’s only booked for one episode, Nathan says he “would like to continue that story” in Season 9. Lastly, and this doesn’t pertain to your question but I thought you should know: The show will once again stay in production after the finale wraps to shoot a few standalone “bonus” episodes (two, to be precise) to air sometime next fall.

"It's kind of shot like 24 and everyone's life is in danger," executive producer Stephen Nathan says of the episode, which features an outbreak of a highly contagious, deadly disease in the lab that will infect one of the team members. Since Booth is furiously trying to get into the locked-down Jeffersonian, conventional wisdom might point to Brennan being the afflicted. But our money is on Cam or her new lover Arastoo. "[This] crisis deepens their relationship quite a bit," Nathan teases. "It's going to be very intense for them."
