Μετά από μία αμφιλεγόμενη δεύτερη σεζόν που δίχασε κριτικούς και θεατές, το HBO αποφάσισε να προχωρήσει με την τρίτη σεζόν του True Detective. Ο δημιουργός της σειράς Nic Pizzolatto μετά την ολοκλήρωση της δεύτερης σεζόν υπέγραψε συμβόλαιο με το κανάλι έως το 2018. Το κανάλι θέλησε να του δώσει χρόνο για τη συνέχεια της σειράς, μιας και θεώρησε πως ασκήθηκε πιέση μετά την ολοκλήρωση της εξαιρετικής πρώτης σεζόν.

Οι πρώτες φήμες ήθελαν τον Pizzolatto να έχει περισσότερο ρόλο ως supervisor, δίνοντας του έτσι τη δυνατότητα να ασχοληθεί και με άλλα projects, όπως κι έγινε με το reboot του Perry Mason, με πρωταγωνιστή τον Robert Downey Jr. Οι πρώτες πληροφορίες για την τρίτη σεζόν ήρθαν όταν ο David Milch (Deadwood, Luck) ήρθε για να βοηθήσει τον Pizzolatto και ύστερα ανακοινώθηκε πως ο Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Marvel's Luke Cage, House of Cards) έκλεισε και επίσημα να πρωταγωνιστήσει στο ρολο του detective Wayne Hays.

Πλέον με τη σημερινή επιβεβαίωση του καναλιού πως η τρίτη σεζόν έρχεται και επίσημα, βγήκαν στη δημοσιότητα νέες πληροφορίες. Ο Pizzolatto θα είναι και πάλι showrunner, αποχωρώντας από τη σειρά Perry Mason, ενώ θα είναι υπεύθυνος για όλα τα σενάρια, με εξαίρεση το τέταρτο επεισόδιο, όπου και βοήθησε ο Milch. Ο Jeremy Saulnier (The Green Room) θα σκηνοθετήσει τη σεζόν μαζί με τον Pizzolatto, ενώ ο Milch θα σκηνοθετήσει το τέταρτο επεισόδιο. Ειδικοί παραγωγοί θα είναι οι Scott Stephens, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Steve Golin, Bard Dorros και Richa, Brown. Ακόμη δεν έχει γίνει γνωστό πόσα επεισόδια θα έχει η σεζόν, πάντως ο πρόεδρος προγράμματος του HBO, Casey Bloys, δήλωσε τον Ιούλιο πως έχει διαβάσει πέντε σενάρια. Πιο πιθανή ημερομηνία πρεμιέρας είναι μέσα στο 2018.

Υπόθεση: Η τρίτη σεζόν εστιάζει στην ιστορία ενός μακάβριου εγκλήματος στην καρδιά των Ozarks και ενός μυστηρίου που πλανάται για δεκαετίες και εξελίσσεται σε τρεις ξεχωριστές χρονικές περιόδους.
